May 7th is National Mental Health Day (Mental Health Week is May 4th-May 10th). Show you care by using #icareaboutyou From natural disasters to economic meltdowns, from wars abroad to shootings close to home, the world in which we raise our children is increasingly complex. Our natural instinct as parents and concerned citizens is to protect children from hardship, but we cannot shelter our children from all adversity. What we can do is try to really connect with our kids; we can teach them how to cope positively with adversity and grow from it.
So, what causes children to experience stress? According to a survey of 875 9-to 13-year-old boys and girls, things like homework, friends, and family cause stress. This all makes sense. Here's what is not intuitive: A whopping 75 percent of kids surveyed agreed that what they want most when they're stressed is their parents' help, yet this only ranked ninth on the list of coping methods kids use to feel better. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/renee-jain/the-1-thing-kids-want-when-theyre-stressed_b_6100698.html The Family Education & Support Centre has a Parenting Teens (STEP-T) program starting this today, Tuesday, October 21st. If you know of any families that would benefit from this great program or you would like more information please call the Centre at 604-467-6055 to register today.
There are a few spots left in the Parenting Your Teen- Parenting Program. This program begins on April 18th and runs from 6-8pm here at the Family Education and Support Centre. This program is great for parents who are looking to reconnect with their teen, needs skills around setting healthy boundaries with their teen, recognizing warning signs of addiction, as well as signs of depression, anxiety and what is normal teenage behaviour, or just needs support and information about raising a teenager in today’s confusing world. The cost associated with this program is $40 for part one and $40 for part two, as well as $25 for the course book. As it is early in the new fiscal year there are lots of subsidies available for any clients where cost is a concern.
