How to be successful at Pitt Meadows Secondary
High school can seem daunting; however, that does not need to be the case. If you follow these simple steps, you can turn your high school years into a very positive experience.
Know What to Expect
In high school you have more independence that you have had in the past. However, more independence means more responsibility. In high school you need to be responsible for your learning and be mature and responsible enough to handle the additional freedoms you are given.
So what does this mean?
If you are struggling in a class or are not understanding a concept, you need to speak to your teacher or counsellor. Most Teachers are also available for extra help during lunch or after school, you need to speak to your teacher to set this up or click here for tutorial times and homework club details.

Useful Website:
www.learnnowbc.ca
This is an excellent website that offers on-line tutoring, study guides, video lessons, homework help and learning resources. You need to set up an account and will need your PEN number to do so. Your PEN number can be found on your report card or you can see a counsellor to get it.
Attendance is Important
When you miss school, you miss lectures, notes, class discussions, homework explanations, assignments, quizzes, and tests. If doesn't matter how good you are about making up your work, you can never make up everything you miss.
If you are absent, it is up to you to find out what you missed and for getting all of your work made up. See your teacher before or after class and ask when they might have time to talk to you.
When talking to graduating students about thier experience at high school, the majority of the students said that they wished they didn't skip as it did have an impact on how well they did. They might not have noticed this impact for awhile but it did catch up with them. The other comment they make is to get involved at school. Join clubs, try out for teams, participate in lunchtime activities etc.
Set Goals
Setting goals is important for people of all ages. Get in the habit of setting both short-term and long-term goals. Make sure your goals are: specific, can be measured, action-oriented, realistic and timed (S.M.A.R.T)
Don't forget to write your goals down. Studies have shown that you are more likely to achieve a goal that's written down. It is a good habit to get into to write your goals down each semester and to revisit them each term.
Get Involved
High school is like anything else - the more you put into it, the more you get out of it. PMSS offers a wide variety of activities, clubs, and teams so get out there and get involved.
Make Good Choices & Decisions
When you make good choices and decisions you reap the rewards. When you make poor choics and decisions, you suffer the consequences.
You are required to make lots of decisions in high school. Use the following four steps to help you with your decision making:

3. Make sure you have all the information you need
